Athletes from refugee camp will be part of historical COVID-19 Virtual Championships

United States - 2020/06/04 - The COVID-19 Virtual International Taekwondo Championships is the first ever, live, real-time tournament in the history of Taekwondo with more than 20 countries participating.

This event is hosted by GCS Portland USA Chapter and U.S. World Class Taekwondo Association, providing USD$12,000 of sponsorship for athletes around the world to participate in this historical virtual competition experience when all sports events had come to a halt due to the global pandemic.

With GCS International President, Dr. Chungwon Choue’s support, the COVID-19 Virtual Championships will serve competitors from 20+1 countries, including the Taekwondo Humanitarian Foundation (THF) refugee camp athletes in Azraq, Jordan, as well as the Global Peace Corps of South Korea. A total of 120 Black Belt Poomsae and Freestyle Poomsae competitors, along with 200+ color belts will participate in this four-day event, June 4 – 7, 2020.

Among participants the event will have participation of athletes from Nepal, Cambodia and Sri Lanka, who are receiving free Taekwondo education and training under the WT Cares Program.

In addition to the USD$12,000 scholarship for the less privileged, GCS Portland USA Chapter will also donate a portion of the proceeds from this event to GCS International NGO to provide funding resources for victims who are suffering as a result of the current COVID-19 pandemic.

COVID-19 Virtual Championships will fundraise for GCS

The purpose of the tournament is to encourage athletes to stay focused in achieving new heights in their sport, to shed light and hope during this difficult time, and to help others in a productive and meaningful manner through their love of Taekwondo.

This is the spirit of Taekwondo: to grow physically and mindfully during challenging times.

We thank each participant for their great contributions to good cause, where Goodwill (G), Cooperation (C), Service (S) can take place due to their effort in making a positive difference. We also wish to thank our team of highly qualified World Taekwondo International Referee volunteers for the generosity of their time in training, striving through test events over the past month, and for bringing us fair play in the upcoming four days of competitions.

Thank you for helping us bring the world together and helping those who are in need. Peace is More Precious than Triumph!
