Bae Jong-beom got things started with the men’s individual title at Chosun University Gymnasium, earning 7.940 points in the demonstrative form of the traditional Korean martial art.
Mahdi Jamali Fashi of Iran earned 7.640 points for the silver and Maulana Haidir of Indonesia received the bronze with 7.5909 points.
Later Tuesday, Yang Han-sol won the gold medal in the women’s individual event with 7.670 points.
Ollin Medina Lopez of Mexico got the silver with 7.640 points. Aybuke Yilmaz Elif of Turkey and Liao Wen-hsuan of Chinese Taipei shared the bronze medal with 7.570 points.
The 2015 Summer Universiade, which marks the 28th edition of the sports event, opened in the city of Gwangju on July 3, and will run until July 14.
More than 9,000 student athletes and officials from over 170 countries are taking part in the championships.
The last edition of the Universiade was held in the Russian city of Kazan. Over 10,400 university athletes from 162 countries participated in 13 mandatory and 14 optional sports, making the 2013 Universiade the biggest ever games in the history of the event.
