Australia has been at the forefront of the WTF’s GMS and GAL initiatives and to further the implementation of this global initiative, Australia will be the first country to make the GAL mandatory for all its state, regional and national competitions.

STA’s President, John Kotsifas stated,

“We have been assisting the WTF in the development of the Global Membership System for a number of years now. We were the first country to fully implement the GMS as our own national membership system so as to provide our members with a comprehensive and revolutionary membership system developed by the WTF. To further our partnership with the WTF, we have now decided to make the Global Athlete licence mandatory for all competitions in Australia from 1st January 2014. This means, that all athletes irrespective of age and belt rank, will be required to have the GAL in order to compete as an athlete in Australia. Further, all Coaches, judges and officials will also be required to have the Global licence in order to officiate and coach at any Australian competition.

Australia will again be the first country to implement this requirement and we will work closely with the WTF to provide valuable feedback of this important initiative that will be implemented in 2014.

Consequently, in Australia, all ordinary members of STA will hold WTF GMS membership, all athletes competing domestically will hold the WTF GAL and all officials, coaches and judges participating at any domestic events will be required to hold a WTF global licence.

These are all important developments for our sport in Australia and our desire to link our domestic activities to the WTF global membership system and to further develop our relationship with the WTF

If my understanding is correct, if you have a GAL, that is all you need, you now don’t need to pay club membership, you don’t need to pay State or National registration and you are able to compete all over the world, this would be cheaper than what players are paying now ?

If all member only need to pay 1 card which GAL that includes insurance and membership fee plus license to complete in local competitions as well (National and states), that will helps to accomodate more athlete to compete which is very good. Unfortunately that is not what I heard. They still want the member to pay another WTF General membership and still paying the official expenses when the athletes compete overseas. While TA usually only allow athletes to pay their own expenses (travel accomodation and meals) and they still reward those athletes with great points/winnings with some funding. I hope STA will comply with this and put ATHLETES and their family affordability as their top interest.

GAL as it stands for GLOBAL Athlete Licence should be only apply for athlete who is competing ” globally”. It doesn’t make sense if all athlete has to have this as not all of them competitive and mostly only compete interclub or within Australia.
To make this sport more approachable and lovable, especially for family of tkd who partially or whole family joined as athlete. Some only join for family team, some only join for fitness. If all athlete need to pay so many memberships, I think most of them will go bankrupt first before competing. There are gears and travel cost as well plus the training cost.
