Nigeria Taekwondo Federation President Targets Gold for the Olympics

George Ashiru has declared that he is  targeting four medals at the 2015 Africa Games.


2013-06-09-Nigeria_Taekwondo_Foundation2013-05-16_657x_Nigerian_TaekwondoGeorge Ashiru who was elected this year as president of Nigeria Taekwondo Federation (NTF) (Read article: Nigerian Taekwondo Federation has a New President) and who back then promised that the country would witness a drastic transformation in the game, assuring that apart from grass roots programmes, his board would target gold medals in the Olympics, Commonwealth Games and World Championships.

He also stated “We have to set high standards because it will push us higher than we are going”, “If Nigerians are looking for one gold, it is possible we can look for four.”.

As per an article published today by dailytimes.com.ng, he has declared that he is targeting four medals at the 2015 Africa Games.

“The NTF has been a whirlwind of activities since our inauguration,” said Ashiru. “Nine children have gone to Korea for various training programmes over the summer. Six coaches have been approved for Coaching Courses in Korea later this year. We have started our National Licensing and Insurance Scheme.

On 2015 Africa Games, Ashiru said: “I actually did mention four gold medals and that’s our minimum target. We will be keying into our new ‘Strategic Initiative for Taekwondo’ which will also key into the NSC‘s new High Performance System”

“Talent Identification and Development, and funneling the talent into an intensive Elite Athletes programme. Key to this is the development of coaching capacity and continued competition opportunities for our identified talent. It is achievable with the cooperation of the NSC, NOC and other bodies.”

Asked what legacy he would like to leave as seventh NTF boss, Ashiru added: “My legacy will target changing the public brand of taekwondo, increasing our medals potential in major sporting events, doubling the current rate of enrollment and making taekwondo the most loved sport for Nigerians.”
