Damon Sansum, 26, won his first senior title in Germany last year, and also won gold in his last tournament by winning the Trelleborg Open in Sweden in February.

He beat fellow Team GB fighter – and London 2012 Olympic bronze medallist – Lutalo Muhammad in the final of last year’s competition in Hamburg.

“That win meant so much. It was one of the best victories in my whole fighting career, in both styles,” the former world kickboxing champion said.

Sansum wants to use his recent success to build momentum ahead of this year’s biggest tournament, the World Championships in Mexico in July.

He said: “Winning in Trelleborg was a good way to start the year. My goal now is to get some consistency and hopefully that will result in more medals.”

The Elgin-born figher stepped up a weight class in Sweden and will again fight with the heavyweights (-87kg) this weekend.

Sansum is part of a 13-strong team travelling from GB Taekwondo’s Academy in Newton Heath.

Bianca Walkden is looking to continue her unstoppable form having won her last four tournaments in Sweden, France, Switzerland and Serbia.

Olympic champion Jade Jones will look to progress further than the first round after a low-key comeback in Sweden, her first competitive action since London 2012.
