Indonesian taekwondo athletes contending in the recent Hong Kong Open taekwondo tournament managed to win five gold, two silver and one bronze medals, an official supervising Indonesian taekwondo team said here on Tuesday.
Indonesian taekwondo team manager Dasantyo Prihadi said that three of the gold medals were contributed by female athletes, while the remaining ones were contributed by male athletes vying in the international taekwondo championship sanctioned by World Taekwondo Federation (WTF).
“The athletes have demonstrated their best achievements in the event, proving that the programs applied in national taekwondo training center are on track,” Basantyo said here as quoted by the tribunnews online.
He said that the tournament was held from Feb. 23 to 24 in Kowloon, Hong Kong, participated by athletes from several countries, among others China, Malaysia and Indonesia.
He added that the recent Hong Kong Open taekwondo championship was designated as a tryout forum event for the athletes before deployed to vie in higher level international championships.
“This is a good start,” he said, adding those athletes have been joining national training center since Oct. last year.
After taking part in Hong Kong Open, those athletes were scheduled to partake in Islamic Solidarity Games and world championship in Mexico slated in June this year, he added.
