The WTF World Taekwondo Tour 2010 Moscow, to be held at the Moscow Martial Arts Center, will draw 18 top-ranked players from seven countries.
The inaugural WTF World Taekwondo Tour was held in Mexico City, Mexico on Nov. 14, 2009 in a great success.
The WTF-promoted one-day event will feature both individual and team competitions. The Russian Taekwondo Union, headed by Mr. Anatoly K. Terekhov, organizes the prestigious event.
“We are ready for the World Taekwondo Tour 2010 Moscow and we will show the world the spectacular techniques of taekwondo,” Mr. Terekhov said.
Dr. Chungwon Choue, president of the World Taekwondo Federation, said “We hope the WTF World Taekwondo Tour will develop into professional taekwondo competitions.”
The individual competitions consist of two weight categories: the women’s +67kg and the men’s +80kg. Four contestants will compete in each weight division for top prize of U.S.$10,000. The silver medalist will take home $5,000 in prize money, while two bronze medal winners will earn $3,000 each.
The invited competitors in the women’s +67kg weight category are Russia’s Anastasia Baryshnikova, the gold medalist at the 2010 European Championships and the 2010 German Open; Spain’s Rosana Simon, the gold medalist at the 2009 World Taekwondo Championships and the 2010 European Championships; Great Britain’s Bianca Walkden, the gold medalist at the 2010 World Combat Games and the 2010 British Open; and Korea’s Yoo-Sun Ji, the gold medalist at the 2010 Korea Open.
In the men’s +80kg weight division, Russia’s Roman Kuznetsov, the gold medalist at the 2010 U.S. Open and the 2010 German Open, will compete for top honors with Italy’s Carlo Molfetta, the gold medal winner at the 2010 European Championships and the silver medalist at the 2009 World Championships; Kazakhstan’s Arman Chilmanov, the silver medalist at the 2010 World Combat Games and the 2010 Asian Championships; and Iran’s Hossein Tajik, the gold medalist at the 2010 Asian Championships and the 2010 Dutch Open.
Unlike the inaugural World Taekwodno Tour 2009 Mexico, which featured only individual competitions, the Moscow event will feature the team competition. A five-member male Korean team will compete with a five-member Russian team for top prize of $20,000. The second placer will take home $10,000.
The invited Korean team members are Chang-Jun Park, In-young Hur, Jun-tae Kim, Dae-sung Choi, and Sang-bin Lee. The five Russian team members are Vasily Nikitin, Ibragim Mekhtiev, Albert Gaun, Aleksiy Avsadzhanishvili, and Dmitriy Frank.
The WTF Competition Rules will apply to the WTF World Taekwondo Tour 2010 Moscow, with some modifications. A protector and scoring system, formerly called electronic body protector, and an instant video replay system will not be used for the Moscow event and there will be no protest process. A fourth sudden-death round will be held.
The opening ceremony of the WTF World Taekwondo Tour 2010 Moscow will be held at 4 p.m. on Dec. 9 at the competition venue, shortly followed by a taekwondo demonstration by the WTF Taekwondo Presentation Team for the visiting spectators.
Two female semifinal matches will be followed by two male semifinal matches and the women’s final match and the men’s final match. The male team competition will be held as the highlight of the two-hour event, which is to be broadcast both in a live and/or delayed format.
